Privacy Awareness Week: What are Privacy Rights?

This article is part of our series as part of the Privacy Awareness Week (PAW) campaign, a national call to ‘power up’ on privacy. MIFWA takes privacy seriously and is a proud supporter of PAW.

What are Privacy Rights?

Privacy rights refer to the fundamental human right to have personal information and activities protected from unauthorised access, use, or disclosure. This includes the right to control how one’s personal information is collected, stored, and shared.

Difference between Privacy and Confidentiality

While privacy and confidentiality are closely related, they are not the same thing.

Privacy refers to the right of an individual to control their personal information and to have it protected from unauthorised access or use.
Confidentiality, on the other hand, is the obligation to protect information that has been entrusted to an individual or organisation. This means ensuring that sensitive information is only accessed and shared with those who have a legitimate need to know. Confidentiality is more an ethical obligation and can be contracted in.

At MIFWA, we are committed to upholding both privacy and confidentiality to the highest standards.

This is essential for maintaining the trust and wellbeing of our consumers and stakeholders.
