2024 applications are now closed.

MIFWA is pleased to announce that the 2024 Tecwyn Jones Bequest Grants round is now open.

Are you or your family member or carer already receiving MIFWA’s services and could do with some financial assistance to purchase resources and equipment, attend events, enrol into a course or in need of some respite?

If yes and you’re a current MIFWA member registered before 29 January 2024, then you may be eligible for a grant.

Follow the guidelines and submit your application form by 5pm on Friday 15 March 2024.

Please contact Alison at alison.nesbit@mifwa.org.au if you have any questions or need some assistance.

About Tecwyn Jones

tecwyn 2023Tecwyn Jones was a member of the Lorikeet Clubhouse from its beginnings in 1994. He would regularly attended the weekly lunches in the days when MIFWA was the Schizophrenia Fellowship of WA. He was a popular and generous member and had a keen interest in everyone.

Tecwyn had a passion for travel and was well informed regarding world events. He enjoyed the friendship and support he received through the Lorikeet Centre and the Fellowship, and regarded all attendees as family.

When Tecwyn passed away in 2004, he bequeathed a generous amount of money to MIFWA to be shared equally between Lorikeet Centre and MIFWA. These funds have since been invested, with the interest from the investment being used across both services.

Annual Tecwyn Jones Bequest Grants

In May 2007, the MIFWA Board decided that the interest from the investment would be used to set up an annual Tecwyn Jones Bequest Grants Program to benefit the individuals and families who access our supports and services. We felt it would also be a wonderful way to pay ongoing tribute to Tecwyn’s memory.

The Tecwyn Jones Bequest Grants Program is administered by MIFWA and applications can be up to a maximum of $500 per individual/couple.

Grants have previously been awarded for uses such as attending a conference, enrolling into a training course, purchasing a musical instrument, going on a short respite break for carers and family members, and purchasing educational resources such as books. Please note that these grants cannot be used to purchase laptops, computers and mobile devices.

What past recipients said about the grants

“I would like to thank you all for the grant you have given to my daughter. As a mother it is difficult to see your child in depression, you feel helpless and alone. A caring organisation like yourselves gives myself and other people hope. Thank you again.”

“I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the bequest grant you have so kindly given. Words cannot express how thankful and appreciative I am for your kindness. I have been suffering from major depression for the las 18 months or so and have previously had bouts of depression due to long periods of illness and have not been able to work. This grant will help in my recovery.”

Application Guidelines and Terms and Conditions

Before applying, all applicants must read the following Guidelines and Terms and Conditions:

  • Applicants must have a lived experience of mental health issues or must be carers, family members or friends of a person with a mental health issue AND must be a current MIFWA member registered before 29 January 2024.
  • Applicants must attached at least 1 written quote to their Application Form. The quotes must demonstrate that the grant will be used to improve quality of life and/or assist in the journey towards recovery.
  • Applications can be up to a maximum of $500 per individual or couple, and cannot be for laptops, computers and mobile devices.
  • Applicants who were successful in receiving a grant from this program in 2021, 2022 or 2023 are automatically ineligible to apply and receive a grant in 2024.
  • An independent panel reviews all applications, judging each application on its own merit and considers the individual circumstances of the applicants. However, as funds are limited, applicants who demonstrate that a personal contribution has been made towards costs will be looked upon favourably, and preference will be given to active Lorikeet and MIFWA members. The panel makes recommendations to the MIFWA Board who make the final decision on the grant recipients.
  • The panel may offer only part of the amount requested. Their decision is final.

  • Applicants who demonstrate that a personal contribution has been made towards costs will be looked upon favourably. However, if you are not able to make a contribution, this will not stop you being considered for a grant.
